Broadening your skill set

My goal in college was to become a well-rounded media professional; however, I significantly lacked experience behind a video camera. Before graduation, I took advantage of different opportunities to boost my confidence working in videography. For instance, I joined the university's video production club, volunteered as a camera operator at my church, and enrolled in several video production and broadcasting courses. Because of these hands-on experiences, I further diversified my skill set to now include camera operation in addition to writing and graphic design skills.

Enhancing team morale and a positive work environment

I noticed low staff morale and a lack of inclusivity after being promoted to managing editor of my university newspaper in 2022. As a result, I adopted a more collaborative leadership style than previously employed- designating responsibilities to different members based on interest and skill level along with creating open forums for idea generation during weekly staff meetings. A couple fun monthly activities were also routinely scheduled to improve team building and fellowship outside of the office. Overall, the newsroom became a more positive working environment. Staff attitudes greatly enhanced and stronger colleague relationships were established.

Managing conflict through listening and adaptability

As managing editor of my university newspaper, I recognized one of the staff writers had difficulty properly completing assigned tasks. To resolve the issue, I immediately scheduled an individual meeting with her. We both freely discussed our concerns in a professional manner, remaining calm and level-headed. The staff member disclosed some personal challenges that made writing harder for her. Once we came to a mutual understanding, I brainstormed ideas to best accommodate her interests and capabilities, ultimately landing on an advertising position. As a result, she began flourishing in her new role. The experience taught me the value of learning and better understanding colleagues’ unique talents because when given responsibilities they can excel in, the overall team becomes more productive.

Expanding online presence

Lock Haven University’s Health Science Department did not have an online presence prior to 2020. Therefore, I took the initiative as the department’s new Social Media Specialist to build the program’s online presence from scratch and further connect with students. Within two years, followers increased by 300+ and engagement rose by over 800%. As a social media practitioner, I learned that it is extremely important to form relationships with audiences to boost brand loyalty and peak interest.
